Cruachan The Hollow Mountain Visitor Centre offers visitors a unique insight into the underground world of Cruachan Power Station. Opened in 1965, Cruachan Power Station was the first in the world of its kind. Hidden away, 1km deep below Argyll and Bute’s highest mountain Ben Cruachan, is an operational Pumped Storage Hydro Power Station. Our fascinating guided tours lead visitors to an underground viewing gallery. Looking out onto the power station machine hall - large enough to house a full size football pitch horizontally and the tower of London vertically, visitors will see machinery capable of producing enough electricity for 400,000 homes in just 28 seconds. An educational, informative and fun experience for visitors of all ages, our tours give visitors a unique insight into how Scotland’s landscape was harnessed to create this feat of human endeavour and Scottish engineering. The free exhibition explains how the Pumped Storage Hydro power station, built almost 60 years ago, operates today. Housing Interactive exhibits, films and a Kids zone for younger visitors, the exhibition is packed with information on how electricity is made and the importance of Cruachan Power Station in delivering services for the Britain's National Grid.
