Spring is the perfect time to get out and explore Argyll’s magnificent coastline. And as well as beaches, wildlife and sea lochs, you’ll also find some wonderful coastal gardens. These beautiful gardens lead down to the sea or overlook the sea, and many have stunning views out to the islands. This spring discover Argyll’s coastal gardens.

Arduaine

Arduaine Garden near Kilmartin sits on southern slope of a promontory that reaches out into Loch Melfort. The garden’s location is stunning, looking out across the Sound of Jura to the Hebridean islands of Scarba, Luing and Jura. Follow the trail through the Woodland Garden to a viewpoint overlooking the islands. A huge variety of flowers and plants thrive here, thanks to a micro-climate that’s moderated by the North Atlantic Drift. Right now, you’ll be treated to s riot of spring flowers. Come April the rhododendrons and azaleas will be in bloom.

The Loch Melfort Hotel is just a short stroll away and is a lovely place to stop for refreshments after your tour of Arduaine Garden.

Lip na Cloiche

Lip na Cloiche on the island of Mull is another stunning coastal garden. It sits on a hillside on the north coast of the island overlooking Ulva, the Treshnish Islands and Ben More. From the seating area at the top of the hill you can enjoy breathtaking views. 

Ardchattan

Ardchattan Priory Gardens face south looking over Loch Etive near Oban. To the east is Ben Cruachan and the west the hills of Mull. The wonderful herbaceous borders, roses, rockery, ornamental trees and a wild flower garden are all set against this stunning coastal backdrop. Spring flowers and early wild flowers are all in bloom at thus time of year.

Linn Botanic Garden

This hidden gem of a garden sits on the the shores of Loch Long at the head of Cove Bay on the west side of Rosneath peninsula. Over the water to the south are the hills of Arran and to the west the hills of the Cowal peninsula. Warmed by the gulf stream, Linn Botanic Gardens is a haven for almost 4,000 species of plants, with an incredible collection of ferns, bamboos, magnolias and rhododendrons.

Mount Stuart

Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute is a spectacular stately house with glorious gardens and grounds, all set against the backdrop of the Firth of Clyde. Walk through the woodland glades to discover a coastal wilderness that contrasts with the beauty of the formal lawns and gardens. In spring, the wooded areas are carpeted with daffodils and bluebells and make for a wonderful stroll.
