Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig, meaning “the beautiful hollow by a broad bay” in Islay’s native Gaelic tongue, is a place like no other. The distillery is perched on the shore, exposed to all the elements the Hebridean Sea can throw at it. Our cherished Kilbride Stream is right beside us. And so is the rich Islay peatland we’ve been infusing into our whisky for over 200 years.

This stunning spot inspired brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston to lay the foundations of the Laphroaig distillery in 1815. Over two centuries later, our substantial distillery boasts seven stills. Yes, we may have grown over the years, but some things never change. Our original kilns still burn as bright as our love for making our world-famous whisky—a dram as individual as the place in which it’s made.
