Kilmartin Glen

Scotland's Adventure Coast

Kilmartin Glen is one of Scotland’s richest and most important prehistoric landscapes. Brimming with historic wonders, within six miles of Kilmartin village there are over 350 ancient monuments, including cairns, standing stones and stones.

Kilmartin Museum and Dunadd Fort are both enthralling places to visit.

Beyond the glen, you will find Knapdale, bounded to the south by the Kintyre peninsula and to the north by the Crinan Canal.

Walkers and cyclists are all drawn to the remote, rugged beauty and wildlife of the area. Knapdale is a place sculpted by the great forces of nature. The western coastline, including the lovely Kilberry peninsula, is fringed with wild, empty beaches. Within this unique habitat, beavers have been reintroduced into Scotland.

If you love getting active in the outdoors, you’re spoilt for choice in Knapdale. Explore the woodlands, forests and coastline by foot, bike or kayak. You’ll find scenic way-marked trails for all abilities.

Gaelic in Scotland

The indigenous language of Argyll contains great richness of expression.  Here we have shared a phrase from local Gaelic poetry about Kilmartin Glen.

Attributed to a Gillies from the glen

Gleann Cille Mhàrtainn far an d’ fhuair mi m’ àrach (Kilmartin Glen where I was raised)

An gleann as fhearr a tha fon ghréin (The best glen under the sun)

Crinan

Scotland's Adventure Coast

Crinan is a lovely spot on the west coast of Scotland in the area of Argyll known as Knapdale. The small harbour looks out across Loch Crinan towards the north of Jura and Scarba, and within the town the most well-known spot is the Crinan Canal which enters out to the Sound of Jura.

Around the town there are plenty of magical paths and shoreline to explore, including the famous Crinan Walk. You can also venture to the heart of Knapdale Forest and reach the high point of Castle Dounie for fantastic views across Jura and beyond. You can also get involved in many exciting activities here, which mainly revolve around watersports such as sailing and yachting.
