Known as the ‘sunshine isle’, Tiree is home to some of the best beaches in Scotland. If you seek tranquillity, freedom of space, and clean pure air, the Isle of Tiree has it all. Though only 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, the sky and sea stretch from horizon to horizon.

With no woodland and only three sizeable hills on an otherwise flat landscape, there is nothing to obscure the view. There is something of a fascination for all visitors, young and old.

The beautiful beaches provide miles of potential sandcastles, gently sloping paddling pools, and windsurfing for the more adventurous.

Getting to the Isle of Tiree

BY TRAIN

Scotland looks beautiful from a train window. Leaving from Glasgow Queen Street station, take the daily train to Oban, where you can catch the Calmac Tiree ferry.

The West Highland Line is considered by many to be one of the great scenic rail journeys in the world. Leaving Glasgow and heading west along the Clyde to Helensburgh, the train passes through deep forests, towering mountains, and mirrored lochs to Crianlarich. It then sweeps along the edge of Loch Awe, in the shadow of Ben Cruachan, where you will see Kilchurn Castle.

BY BOAT

Calmac Ferries

All our inhabited islands can be reached by CalMac Ferries.

The summer timetable runs from just before Easter to around the last week of October. During this period, there is one sailing every day out of Oban to Coll and Tiree. They all leave Oban early in the morning, except on a Tuesday, when the ferry departs early in the afternoon.
On a Wednesday, the ferry continues on to Barra (from Tiree) and returns on the same route. During peak summer, July and August, and Saturdays only, there are two sailings out of Oban: early morning and mid-afternoon.

Always book travel with cars and motorhomes ahead of time, and check the sailing status before travelling. Find out more here.

BY PLANE

Hebridean Air Services & Logan Air

Coll and Tiree can be reached by plane via Hebridean Air Services and Logan Air. A short flight from Oban or Glasgow is a special way to reach the island, although it is not a daily service. Pre-booking is essential.

Scenic Driving Routes

Car hire is simple and convenient if you plan on flying into Scotland. There are many car hire branches at Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports.

On the road, absorb stunning mountain landscapes and glittering loch views as you travel through the majestic west coast scenery.

There’s something cinematic about driving through Argyll’s wild scenery. Once you take to the road, you’ll soon be heading around lochs and making regular pit stops to take in the stunning scenery, key visitor attractions or cafes and restaurants serving high-quality local produce.

Making your way to the Isle of Tiree is easier than you may think.

Most choose to take the regular roll-on, roll-off ferries from Oban but the island also has an airport with several flights from Oban Airport and Glasgow.
